Who’d have thought the humble Humbrol paint could be used so brilliantly? Rather than model aeroplanes, George Shaw paints haunting landscapes in staggering detail. They’re hypnotic in their attention to detail, in fact. There’s something happening in these paintings; you can imagine the people living behind these darkened windows, or hovering on the edge of the canvas, conspicuous by their absence. Anyway…I could look at these for hours and still find new things to see in them. If you took Edward Hopper and Chuck Close, with a sprinkle of David Lynch, you’d probably get George Shaw.
I can’t find his own website, so have a look at the Wilkinson Gallery website to see more of his work.
